Sydney Pollack’s Aretha Franklin doc to get release
March 16th 2010 02:24
After nearly 40 years in the vaults, Sydney Pollack’s footage of the recording of Aretha Franklin’s 1972 album “Amazing Grace” is to finally get a release, possibly by the end of 2010.
Recorded over two nights at L.A.’s New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in January 1972, at a time when Franklin was at the height of her game following the release of “Respect” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Amazing Grace” was dubbed the greatest gospel album ever recorded and is Franklin’s biggest selling album.
Pollack recorded over 20 hours worth of footage but never got around to editing it into a film. After Pollack’s death in May 2008 from stomach cancer, producer Alan Elliott took over the reigns.
Whilst no release date has been given to the film as yet, a trailer has been released.
