Straight line: Daniel Johns at his best
June 22nd 2008 06:57
So Daniel Johns and his “new flame” have finally been ‘snapped’ together. It seems that Silverchair front man has become something of an old hat at playing rock-star, not surprising considering his success from the tender age of 15yrs old.
Daniel was seen two weeks ago being literally held up by his waif of a girlfriend at an exclusive nightclub that only the oh-so-privileged social circus of Sydney are invited to via a text message pin code. Upon punching this code into a wall and whispering “open sesame” in your most seductive voice, (the latter may not be necessary or true) you are let into the back room of a mystery club where, babe, anything is possible. You may even happen to rub shoulders with a high-as-a-kyte Daniel Johns busting through a small crowd stumbling, elegantly wasted, onto the ground.
A similarly unpredictable performance was given by Daniel at the recent APRA Music Awards on Monday. Sporting a white garter on his leg, Daniel ditched the formalities of a traditional acceptance speech and in stead leaped onto Peter Garret in thanks for one of his awards. When Sydney ‘papps’ finally got within range of Daniel and Louise Van De Worst (aka. Waif), he appeared to be busily scribbling something down on a piece of paper. Was it new lyrics to another possibly award winning song? Straight Lines the Second? Holding up the paper, people squinting in anticipation were finally given their answer: “FUCK OFF CUNT”.
The APRA after party became another opportunity for Triple J News Reporter Lucy Carter to catch Johns in fine form, asking him whether he expected the success of his latest album. Amidst muffled throbbing of background music, Johns replied rather loudly that he did not. He thought everyone would accuse them of “selling out”, adding with a hysterical kind of glee that he “didn’t give a shit” if they did anyway. Drug induced or not, Daniel Johns is entitled to all the hysterical glee he wants. He really nails home the increasingly rare case of ‘success’ actually being a result of talent. With tabloids currently filled with good looking wannabes whose superior attitude and designer dresses are just a fragile grasp at making it onto the social pages, it’s refreshing to see an artist whose resume consists of things other than VIP parties, a long list of friends on Facebook and an obscure appearance on MTV.

How great it is to know that I am not the only one who isn't infatuated with C-Grade celebrities and their oh-so-(un)popular ness.
I say bring on Daniel Johns, drugs (in the name of creativity ofcourse) and good old fashion talent. We need desperately to move away from the Natalie Bassingthwaighte's of this sometimes overwhelmingly sad industry.
ROCK ON!
