She kissed a girl and she liked it !

I never thought I’d see the day when a mainstream pop song, played on Nova, would be about lesbians.
While everyone knew that Missy Higgins was always playing for the Girl Team, it took her a good four years to finally say she wasn’t exactly ‘straight’ to Cherry Magazine, one of Sydney’s most popular lesbian reads. The slightly more alternative Tegan and Sara look the part and sing about all things lesbian, Lindsay Lohan has recently acquired a new lady friend and MTV’s new VJ Ruby Rose not only makes being a lesbian look cool, but makes those choosing the more traditional option of God pleasing heterosexuality, look like boring losers.
The difference with Katy Perry however, is that she’s a ‘straight’ girl with a boyfriend, kissing a girl and she “liked it”. Despite the questionable quality of the song, the fact is it’s out there, and somewhere in the world a 13yr old girl is dancing around her room in plastic beads singing “I kissed a girl and I liked it”. Lesbians 1, Hetro’s 0.
While parading around in red lipstick and flirting with the camera, Perry claims her girl kiss is “only human nature”. So after clearing the hurdle of lesbian’s seen as freaks that wear cargo shorts and get crew cuts, she goes for the second with “It's not what, good girls do, Not how they should behave”. So after declaring homosexuality completely normal, she goes on to make it appear like a delicious forbidden apple. And we all know what Eve did.
Ten years ago homosexuality was classified as a mental illness in China for god’s sake, so I think it’s fair to say that while I personally don’t particularly like the song, Katy Perry has just kicked 13yrs olds into a wave of social progress. Ever so subtly, sugar coated and with a cherry on top, Perry is undermining a mass of traditional religious, social and moral views on homosexuality in the form of a bunch of singing tweens. High five for kissing girls babe!
